The process works in a way that you have experienced many many times. You visit your favorite search engine. Enter in a word or phrase you want to research. And then you visit one or more of the sites that show up. Turns out that the website you visit just got free traffic from the search engine. We will be discussing here how to get website traffic to you for free.

If you’re like most people you only click links on the first page or two. The truth is that this first page of results receives nearly all the clicks. And what’s more, the first 3 get over 70% of the clicks.

This means that to get any real traffic you need to be on the first page in Google. To do that, you need to be “ranked” in Google’s Top 10 results. Which brings up..

What is search engine optimization?

Search Engine Optimization means that Google thinks your site matches what people are typing into their search box. The formula Google uses to determine this is known only by Google. However, we do know a few things that count.

Getting indexed

First, before you can get ranked highly, Google has to know you exist. This is called getting “indexed.” This is when Google looks at your site and take notes about it, which are stored in their database.

To get indexed, you have to help Google find your site. Links from other sites are the easiest way to accomplish this. Since some of these site will already be indexed, Google will follow the links on their pages and find you.

Use your Twitter and Facebook updates to get quick indexed links to your site. Because these sites are indexed multiple times every day. So your new link will get indexed very quickly.

Gaining ranking

After getting indexed, you need to work on your search engine ranking. Due to the massive size of the Google database – literally billions of pages – just getting indexed doesn’t do much for you.

Here’s what’s important in ranking:

• Content
• Links
• Activity

Optimized content

This is also called on-page SEO. It’s critical that your page content is consistent with the keyword phrases you’re targeting. Clearly this article is about search engine optimization. One reason Google knows this is because the words search engine optimization appear inside it. Another reason is because there are related words, like website traffic, too.

You also need to make sure the title tags, outbound links and the domain itself match the topic of the page. These all play a part in helping Google determine what your website is about.

Link juice

Next, you need to pay attention to the links to and from your site. The links to your site, as well as the sites you link to are important. With inbound links, you want to have more coming in than going out. So the number of inbound links is important.

A very easy way to get a lot of links to your site is through article marketing. With this strategy what you do is write an article about the topic you’re targeting. Another great way to keep your page content fresh is to enable comments on it and allow others to discuss your page topic. This means you need to get real live people to your site, as well. Online forums are simple source of real live visitors.

Set up forum profiles with the ones related to your website. And post their often. And link back to yourself in your signature file. This generates even more links back to your site. And it gets people to visit the site you link to.

It’s important that you do everything listed here. However, writing a bunch of different articles on the same topic. Creating profiles on a ton of forums. And posting your content all over the web is time consuming. Which means you probably won’t end up doing it.

7. Create a Our Policies page that clearly defines your philosophy and principles in dealing with your customers. Also post your privacy policy as well so that clients know they are secure when they visit your site.

8. Create a FAQ page which addresses most of the doubts and clarifications about your product or your company that are likely to be asked. This helps to resolve most of the customers doubts in their first visit to your site.

9. Ensure that each page on your website has appropriate titles and keywords so that your customer can find their way back to your site if they lose the book mark.

10. Never spam a client, who has opted for newsletters, with unsolicited emails. Later if they decide they want to opt out of the mailings, be sure you honor their request and take them off the mailing list. They may still come back if they like your products. But they will certainly not come back if you continue to flood their email box with mails they no longer wish to receive.
